about the music
‘What gives me hope for the future of classical music was a concert by Jo Sporck’, was the reaction of NRC reviewer Joep Stapel. ‘I was unexpectedly blown away by his new piano concerto Into Silence. I did not know Sporck (mea culpa), but his piece was overwhelmingly good. Fantastic, original and compelling music and ... a crushing surprise.’
This work by Jo Sporck premiered at the end of 2023 and was awarded the maximum number of five points by the NRC. The performance of his first orchestral work took place forty years earlier during the International Gaudeamus Music Week in The Hague. This was followed by invitations from various international venues and a first solo portrait was performed in 1988 in the concert hall of the Union of Soviet Composers in Moscow. The international press also paid attention to his music and spoke highly of his work. As the leading English-language music magazine The Strad noted on the occasion of the release of his CD For silent days: …Jo Sporck has an individual and compelling musical voice, delicately constructed and inhabiting a vivid sound world... discordant yet divine. Although his oeuvre is diverse and extensive, chamber music works form the backbone of his oeuvre. These include many works for piano, solo voice and choir, but also music for less common combinations of eight bass clarinets or two marimbas.
